150 bird day

I met up with Sean this morning at the garden site at St John's. It was a busy morning with 150 birds caught.
Totals were:

Dunnock 4
Robin 5
Blackbird 9
Long-tailed Tit 7
Coal Tit 10 (+10 retraps)
Blue Tit 36 (+9 retraps)
Great Tit 12 (+5 retraps)
Treecreeper 1
House Sparrow 8 (+1 retrap)
Chaffinch 23 (+3 retraps)
Goldfinch 3
Siskin 4

Treecreeper

One of the retrap Great Tits actually turned out to be a control from my garden in Croit-e-Caley! A distance of 14km and almost a year to the day between captures.

We also caught a Great Tit with a moult limit in the primary coverts - something I've never come across before. The outer 2 coverts were retained juvenile feathers whereas the rest had been moulted, looking like adult coverts. The primaries were all of a similar age and, as usual with first year Great Tits, there were no retained juv gc's.

With the ageing criteria being the contrast between the pc's and the gc's then this bird could have easily been aged incorrectly given a cursory glance.

Thanks again to Barry & Christine for letting us set up in their garden and for all the tea, toast and biscuits!!!
